Gallery Feature

Next year my company is sponsoring a game artist gallery show in tandem with GDC 2011, and one of my pieces is being featured at the event's website.
This isn't going to be shown in the gallery though, it's just a promo :p

This one's a released campaign banner background for the Vampire Wars game. We had a ton of characters to cram in, so the proportions and spacing are unfortunately cheated some. It ended up being covered in the final result though, but right now the vampire prince and his minions are taking a break off-screen.

Funny thing is, before I left 2K and moved to a new company one of the artists there asked if I was going to be working on teeny little matte paintings at my new job. I didn't realize it at the time, but that guy's definitely one heck of a prophet.

more game stuff

For my stint at MLB2K10, these little cars were pretty fun to work on.
This is one of the textures I painted for the San Francisco AT&T stadium model, in place of the Chevron Cars mascots.
Game's been out for a while, and I still haven't bought a copy. Hahahahh....gonna have to remedy that soon.

game stuff

Some concepts and assets from a game I worked on earlier this year. Funny enough, I was assigned the tidepool assets after my directors heard that I did one in 113B, hahahah....after a certain time lapse in the game, it changes from high to low, and you can get some random items if you're lucky :D

Finally! back to doing it the non-digital way. Went painting with my roomate Ashley at Quarry Lake, and thankfully this time around the results weren't too bad. The top one was a rush job, since it got too windy too fast. The colors still fall short as usual, since it's been an ongoing battle..but at least the value structuring works better compared to previous efforts. Onwards to the next attempt!

Some stuff I do over lunch break, again. Am thinking about putting a large sign on my desk every time I do one of these since people would randomly come up and ask if I'm working on some project they're unaware of. *sigh*
They're just your average, run of the mill studies, yo.

The Apple Bunch.

Hmm these types of studies might look boring to some folks..but they're pretty fun to do, if only to whip my skills to shape. Now the first one I did looks uglier than the rest of the family, hahahah. Maybe I'll try to be adventurous tomorrow and paint an orange instead.

My thanks for my teacher John Clapp. Without him teaching us about the necessary patience (and pain!) of painting, I would've thrown my tablet midway.
But as always, focus on the process instead of the result.

I pilfered this gold wrapped candy from the workplace of the Giangs twins and miss Chrystal, since apparently there's an overflowing bowl of them sitting nicely on the lobby desk.

And yes, I'll be posting stuff other than studies soon...once I have the time to finish some pieces that have been woefully neglected. =__=

I say tomahtoes, you say tomathoes...

Haven't had time to practice recently since I've been hecka busy at work..but hopefully I'll have more time to do more soon.

more silliness....

It's lunchtime! which means there are more silly drawings to be had.
Here's one of my coworkers who graciously let me draw him as a pseudo tiny monster house pet, complete with fancy gold frame. Thanks, Marv! XD

Lunch break

This is actually a real machine that I found reference for on the web. I've seen the shape used before on mech concepts, so it's interesting to see the object base.
Funny enough, I can see a bit of Neil Campbell Ross's influence once I was done with this doodle. I did an assignment in school using him as a style guide, and I guess it's true what they say about retaining your influences. Huh.

A quick 15 min study..I have one of these on my desk at work. It's a poogle figure from Monster Hunter, and the sheep costumed one happens to be my favorite. Hee.

Teapot LOL

Trying to get a better handle on metal objects..I think I'll try to do this one more time.

Hiking and painting....

Went to Villa Montalvo's hiking trail this weekend with a few friends..who are nice enough to tolerate waiting for me while I set up camp and painting for some odd hours while they go about exploring the area.
So here's one of the two semi-ehhh paintings I managed to wrangle there. As for the other one, it's probably stuck up a tree somewhere, or floating down a creek, or maybe it ended up in some nice lady's living room. Who knows!
I do have some eyewitness account who saw me put it in my bag..where it magically disappeared later in the day. O well! first time for everything, I guess.

Cake LOL

I bought this cake based on how it looked, so here's hoping that it will taste as good now that the study's done.
But anyway. I'm noticing that painting yellow hues is becoming a huge weak spot for me lately. They never turn out quite matching the real object, and either gets too muddy or too orange/red/green.
Mayhaps it's time to start making a yellow-only still life setup.
And yes, I do know that the cast shadow quality is rather..lacking, but o well! time to sleep.

If life was a video game, the message I'd be getting out of these two would be "Thank you for playing. Hit restart to try again."
Joke aside, it does suck that the one time I got up to paint outside is the weekend of overcast and rain -___-

Thursday, April 8, 2010

Lunch break time! I'm test-driving this brush I accidentally found in my's totally nice to block stuff in with, especially for studies.

Gyula Benczur study

...exactly what it says. I wish I had more time with these studies sometimes, since rushing it really won't make you learn anything..
But I'll take what I can get, hahahah.....a bit of practice every now and then is better than nothing.

Speaking of which, hope everyone had a great time at Wondercon this year! got to meet a lot of fantastic artists as usual, and looking at some of the stuff people are working on is inspiring as well. I'm trying to go to comic con for the first time, so hopefully I'll see the peeps there too.

Landscape lunch

And no, I didn't finish this study in one lunch break..that would be kinda insane, I think.

Monday, March 22, 2010

LOL Face

My roomate was in the mood to sketch some random stuff tonight, so I decided to join in and paint something random too. In this case, an alien-faced supermodel with subtle hue shifts in her coloring.
I think leaving some parts loose like this does retain a lot energy, which I would've lost once it gets finished..but anyway! bed time.

LOL Living Room

Been getting over a bad cough recently, so I've had to drag myself out of the funk and actually get something done outside of work.
I didn't actually get this piece done before the light started changing, so some parts are obviously neglected and incorrect, hahaha.....

Mr. Steampunk toy

This came out better than I expected! *dances like an idiot* although the bottom part turned out like poo since it's getting late...

His name is Mr. Shilling Copperpenny, and he's my favorite out of this whole set of vinyls called the Mechtorians.

Saturday, March 6, 2010

LOL Lamp

It's weekend! go out and do something fun :D

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

This looks so crappy but it's time to go sleep... :(

Friday, February 26, 2010

One Lucky Kitty

Which belongs to my roommate, who was gracious enough to let me borrow it to paint tonight.
Unfortunately it has a pearlescent coating, which made me over compensate on the contrast and caused it to look muddy instead. Hmmmm......

LOL Still Life take two

Ok I admit..I tried painting this in acrylic for a good part of an hour, realized that my paint mixing has gone whack and switched back to digital.
Painting's been kicking my butt recently, and it's taking a while to be halfway decent in natural medium again since I've been focusing so much on photoshop lately..all the more reason to try again next time.

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

LOL Still Life

Uhh..half an hour into this practice I realize that I've bitten way more than I could chew. Like hahaha try chewing on a complicated still life setup complete with transparency and light refractions on the glass vase on top of a multi grained table.... -____- maybe I'll try practicing on a simple colored cube next time.

But on to a more interesting news, MLB2K1O is going to be released next month!
It's the first published game I've worked on, and I'll upload some examples of what I worked on once 2K releases it. In the words of my old art director Mr. exciting!

Check out a trailer for the game here:

Some days, you know.

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Depending on when you ask, I was either bored or tired when I made this. Maybe a bit of both.

Concepty WIP

This is something I've been meddling with on and off..but a steampunk themed-suit wearing grasshopper flying with some odd stove powered antique bicycle? why not!

Anyways, I do need some input on the design and it'd be nice of you guys to crit and leave some comments :D

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Speedpaint again

Which is really just because my roomate got sleepy and decided to give me 5 minutes to wrap things up when I was halfway through. Wahhhh...

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Which is mostly just something I was working on during the odd break times.
I got a second monitor at work, finally! this makes the process of looking for reference a lot less cluttered. Now if only the computer can shut down through voice command...

Saturday, January 2, 2010

...somehow I ended up being hecka bored this weekend :(

LOL Room

A follow up to the toaster study?

Recent Endeavours

Some compiled BART sketches and a random painting. Dang, I'm so rusty with traditional paint..bleh.
