decolletage

Figure drawing. This time focused on the body instead of the face like I usually do. A little bit looser than usual, which is nice since I have a tendency to go to render mode too fast sometimes...

leftover figure drawings

Some figure paintings I've done in the past few weeks. The spotlight lamp we use for lighting broke in pieces last week and thankfully didn't hit the model on the way down. Fun times wrangling tape during the session...

Some dailies I've been trying to stick to in between projects. I know they aren't the most exciting things to post, but it's a good reminded for me to get less lazy with stuff.

The model didn't show up yesterday, so mister Henry Ho had to model for us instead. That green jacket he's wearing really messed up my color perception..

more game stuff

This time from a project I worked on last year. It's an online game called Virtual Villagers 5, and I did most of the cutscene illustrations that show up during story moments. Fun to work on, but on average I was limited to only 2-3 days to work on them, and had to match it with a pre-existing style, which was pretty challenging.

One of my co workers also pointed out that the shot with the man holding a mask had a palette and feel that looks like the poster for Zac Efron's movie Charlie St. Cloud. I didn't watch it, but I did see a preview of it when I was watching the A-Team movie. Funny how a fleeting impression got sucked into my brain like that. Hah!

The theme of the day is slacker.

Part of an effort between myself and Lam Nguyen to open a new art blog. Unfortunately the first theme is "slacking," which resulted in this piece being a week late.

We're such slackers we hired a bunch of koalas to do our work. Really!

alien planet

Another environment I've been working on during off hours. Time to move on to the next piece!

Another figure drawing day...I wonder if I foreshortened her body too much.

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Last night's figure drawing session. This model's known to us as the kilt man, and his poses and props were the bomb.

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Got sick last week and had to skip a session. This one's from an hour session which was broken into 20s. I do need to break away from this habit of focusing too much on the face, especially since the overall integrity declines for the rest of the body...

Today is Frank's turn again!

figure painting 2

Another attempt at painting with a live model from yesterday's session. This one clocks in at 40 minutes.
Hopefully I'll be able to upload some cool stuff later this month with some concepts from a game we're been on since the end of last year. That and keep the ball rolling on personal stuff. Whew!

Figure paint

From a figure drawing session at my company last night. We had a great model named Frank, and his goggles are awesome.

Gallery piece

Here's another side project I just finished. This piece is a part of "The Games We Play" gallery show my company held in tandem with GDC 2011, showcasing 25 game artists doing what they do outside of work.
The gallery's called Nieto Fine Arts and it's located close to Union Square, just off of Sutter and Powell. The show's going to run till March 28th, so come by to check it out! there's a lot of cool pieces by other cool artist, including my peeps Chrystal Chan and Lamnho Giang :)

Here's a concept I've been working on during after hours. It's an old abandoned observatory, neglected for decades cause no one really cares to walk over that insanely narrow bridge regardless of the awesome view.

Rothmar the Invincible

For many an age, tales have been sung of Rothmar, the fabled slayer of mice men.
His gloried quest against the wickedness of his foes have warmed many a chincilla on a cold, frosty night. They can sleep safely, knowing that Rothmar is their great protector.

Hahaha. And so up there's my quick illustration accompanying the tales told by a fellow artist known as Kelly Ricker. She tells better stories than I do.

Here's an in-progress concept I've been trying to wrap up. There's still some problematic areas I'll have to fix, especially the water reflections..yikes!
An earlier version of this piece was used in a cutscene for a project that's released recently, which is Last Day of Work's Virtual Villagers 5.
You get to see it near the end of the game, but this one's not going to spoil the story in case anyone's playing it :p

Sam Beam

This one's dedicated to Samuel Beam (or as he's more known, Iron and Wine) and his epic beard.
Absolutely dig his music, especially Boy With a Coin and Resurrection Fern.

Happy New Year!

More photo based practice..just to take the rust off in between lunch breaks. Hoping this year will bring more good work, and better results!
I've been listening to a lot of Iron and Wine lately. It's such a great background music to work with, and Sam Beam is just an awesome musician, period.
