Gallery Feature
Next year my company is sponsoring a game artist gallery show in tandem with GDC 2011, and one of my pieces is being featured at the event's website.
This isn't going to be shown in the gallery though, it's just a promo :p

This one's a released campaign banner background for the Vampire Wars game. We had a ton of characters to cram in, so the proportions and spacing are unfortunately cheated some. It ended up being covered in the final result though, but right now the vampire prince and his minions are taking a break off-screen.
Funny thing is, before I left 2K and moved to a new company one of the artists there asked if I was going to be working on teeny little matte paintings at my new job. I didn't realize it at the time, but that guy's definitely one heck of a prophet.

Finally! back to doing it the non-digital way. Went painting with my roomate Ashley at Quarry Lake, and thankfully this time around the results weren't too bad. The top one was a rush job, since it got too windy too fast. The colors still fall short as usual, since it's been an ongoing battle..but at least the value structuring works better compared to previous efforts. Onwards to the next attempt!

LOLcandy
My thanks for my teacher John Clapp. Without him teaching us about the necessary patience (and pain!) of painting, I would've thrown my tablet midway.
But as always, focus on the process instead of the result.
I pilfered this gold wrapped candy from the workplace of the Giangs twins and miss Chrystal, since apparently there's an overflowing bowl of them sitting nicely on the lobby desk.
And yes, I'll be posting stuff other than studies soon...once I have the time to finish some pieces that have been woefully neglected. =__=

Lunch break
This is actually a real machine that I found reference for on the web. I've seen the shape used before on mech concepts, so it's interesting to see the object base.
Funny enough, I can see a bit of Neil Campbell Ross's influence once I was done with this doodle. I did an assignment in school using him as a style guide, and I guess it's true what they say about retaining your influences. Huh.

Hiking and painting....
Went to Villa Montalvo's hiking trail this weekend with a few friends..who are nice enough to tolerate waiting for me while I set up camp and painting for some odd hours while they go about exploring the area.
So here's one of the two semi-ehhh paintings I managed to wrangle there. As for the other one, it's probably stuck up a tree somewhere, or floating down a creek, or maybe it ended up in some nice lady's living room. Who knows!
I do have some eyewitness account who saw me put it in my bag..where it magically disappeared later in the day. O well! first time for everything, I guess.

Cake LOL
I bought this cake based on how it looked, so here's hoping that it will taste as good now that the study's done.
But anyway. I'm noticing that painting yellow hues is becoming a huge weak spot for me lately. They never turn out quite matching the real object, and either gets too muddy or too orange/red/green.
Mayhaps it's time to start making a yellow-only still life setup.
And yes, I do know that the cast shadow quality is rather..lacking, but o well! time to sleep.

Gyula Benczur study
...exactly what it says. I wish I had more time with these studies sometimes, since rushing it really won't make you learn anything..
But I'll take what I can get, hahahah.....a bit of practice every now and then is better than nothing.
Speaking of which, hope everyone had a great time at Wondercon this year! got to meet a lot of fantastic artists as usual, and looking at some of the stuff people are working on is inspiring as well. I'm trying to go to comic con for the first time, so hopefully I'll see the peeps there too.

LOL Face
My roomate was in the mood to sketch some random stuff tonight, so I decided to join in and paint something random too. In this case, an alien-faced supermodel with subtle hue shifts in her coloring.
I think leaving some parts loose like this does retain a lot energy, which I would've lost once it gets finished..but anyway! bed time.

LOL Still Life take two
Ok I admit..I tried painting this in acrylic for a good part of an hour, realized that my paint mixing has gone whack and switched back to digital.
Painting's been kicking my butt recently, and it's taking a while to be halfway decent in natural medium again since I've been focusing so much on photoshop lately..all the more reason to try again next time.

LOL Still Life
Uhh..half an hour into this practice I realize that I've bitten way more than I could chew. Like hahaha try chewing on a complicated still life setup complete with transparency and light refractions on the glass vase on top of a multi grained table.... -____- maybe I'll try practicing on a simple colored cube next time.
But on to a more interesting news, MLB2K1O is going to be released next month!
It's the first published game I've worked on, and I'll upload some examples of what I worked on once 2K releases it. In the words of my old art director Mr. Blouin..so exciting!
Check out a trailer for the game here:
